Top of Ocoee Dam No. 2
Constructed 1912-1913, Ocoee Dam No. 2 is a 30' high, 450' long,
rock-filled timber crib structure. Repairs of Ocoee Dam No. 2 were
completed in 1980. These repairs gave this dam it's unique look. With
the downstream face of the rockfilled timber dam severely damaged, the
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) chose a process called
Roller-compacted concrete (RCC). In the RCC process of construction
the concrete is spread in one-foot-thick layers, with each additional
layer being slightly less wide than the layer beneath it. This
layering of the concrete is what gives Ocoee Dam No. 2 it's
"staircase" look on the downriver side. This photo was taken at the
top of the dam. |
